Carolyn Mae (Witt) Berger, age 87, of Menomonie, WI, formerly of Chippewa Falls, WI, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at American Lutheran Home in Menomonie, surrounded by her family.
She was born December 1, 1937, in La Crosse, WI, to Raymond and Dorothy (Lundgren) Witt.
Carolyn met the love of her life, Ansel while babysitting for her future sister-in-law, Helen. They were married on April 28, 1956, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. She dedicated her life to her family, and in addition to raising her own children, Carolyn extended her nurturing spirit to others by offering her time and love as a babysitter.
She and Ansel were in a bowling league together for many years and also enjoyed gambling at Turtle Lake Casino, where, more times than not, she came out ahead. Carolyn was also the reigning 7-time bean bag tournament champion at American Lutheran Home. Playing cards with longtime friends Linda and Karl Weber was a favorite pastime as well. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, but much to most of our dismay, she had one flaw: she was a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan. We loved her anyway, despite her questionable taste in football teams.
Carolyn is survived by her four children: Debby Schuh of Menomonie, WI; Julie Roen (Robert Dorshak) of Bloomer, WI; Steve (Mary Jane) Berger of Middleton, WI; and Eric Berger (Lisa Davis) of Oregon, WI; six grandchildren Ryan (Bobbie Jo) Roen, Valerie (Chris) Seever, Amanda Stephens (Ryan Jahr), Kyle (Maile) Roen, Alex (Bri) Roen and Holly Mara; eleven great-grandchildren Logan (Jillie), Ashley (Robert), Sammi, Tate, Nathaniel, Samantha, Makana, Anna, Brynley, Harper, and Rayne; and three great-great-grandchildren Harlee, Cash, and Isaac. She is further survived by three sisters-in-law, Nancy Witt, Helen Cooper, and Barb Suhr, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Ansel; her parents, Raymond and Dorothy; brother, John; sister/brother-in-law, Marion and Al Hickman; brother-in-law Tom Suhr; niece, Rhonda Adkins; great nephews Kurt Servais and Paul Simpson; special family friends Linda and Karl Weber.
We want to express our gratitude to the staff at American Lutheran Home and St. Croix Hospice for their kindness and compassion.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, WI, with Pastor Bob Koepp officiating.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Spring at Cedar Falls Cemetery in Menomonie.
