Destination Weekend at UW-Stout invites community to celebrate students at academic, athletic, creative events

Featured events include Women’s Flag Football Jamboree and Fashion Without Fabric on April 12

Menomonie, Wis. – University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Destination Weekend invites families, alumni and the community to campus to celebrate students and experience what defines Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, from Friday, April 11, to Sunday, April 13.

Enjoy a slate of academic, athletic, and fine arts events, and more, like the Women’s Flag Football Jamboree and the annual sellout Fashion Without Fabric.

Some events are ticketed, but most do not require advance registration.

Saturday’s Featured Events

Students in grades 6-12 are invited to a hands-on STEM Exploration. STEM-X will start at 9:45 a.m. on April 12, in Jarvis Hall Science Wing room 112.

Thanks to an Xcel Energy Foundation Award, this event gives students the opportunity to build, code, and innovate together through robotics, engineering and 3D printing. Lunch is included. Register via CampDoc.

Community members can create a concrete coaster and join the Construction Lab tour at 10 a.m. on April 12, in Jarvis Hall Technology Wing room 157.

A Women’s Flag Football Jamboree will begin at noon on Saturday, April 12, at Don and Nona Williams Stadium, with 11 games scheduled for the afternoon. Learn more about the new league.

UW-Stout is partnering with the Minnesota Vikings and five NCAA institutions to launch the new league. Other teams are Augustana University, Concordia College Moorhead, Gustavus Adolphus College, Bethel University and the University of Northwestern, St. Paul.

The encore event of the evening is Fashion Without Fabric, the annual showstopper, where students bring their wearable sculptures to life on the runway.

Fashion Without Fabric is at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, an anchor event in the Destination Weekend lineup.

This year’s theme is “Welcome to Phenomonie!” The show is at 7 p.m. on April 12, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

Tickets are available at uwstout.universitytickets.com, and seating is first-come, first-served. In collaboration with industry partners and alumni, the School of Art and Design will award two $1,000 scholarships to the winners of the highly competitive show. Donate to support the scholarship.

Students rehearsing for 'Alice By Heart' in Harvey Hall Theatre

Students will perform “Alice by Heart,” led by Director Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 4, 5, 10*, 11 and 12; and 2 p.m. on April 6.  

“Alice by Heart” is a musical set during World War II, in the rubble of the London Blitz. Alice Spencer’s teenage life is turned upside down when she and her friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.

* An accessible performance will be held on April 10, with a more informal atmosphere aimed to welcome those with sensory difficulties or autism. The performance will remain the same but with small adjustments in terms of lights and sound.
