For the first time in school history the boys tennis team is headed to the WIAA team state tennis tournament. The Mustangs won the sectional tournament yesterday (May 22nd) scoring 46 points by claiming 4 of the 7 sectional championships and taking runner up at 2 other positions. Andrew Busch was the sectional champion at the number 3 singles position, while Menomonie swept the doubles championships. Noah Reckin and Brady Goodman claimed the top doubles flight championship while Charlie Behrend and Micah Gunderson took the #2 doubles championship. At #3 doubles, Oliver Patrick and Harrison Davis became sectional champions after beating a team Menomonie had lost to twice earlier in the season. Isaac Johnson claimed the runner up position at the #1 singles position after claiming a match tiebreak victory in the semis in the match of the day against Eau Claire Memorial. Jacob Rue was runner up at the #4 singles position.
Before heading to the team state tournament, the Mustangs will be well represented at the WIAA individual state tournament, sending half their team to individual state. Isaac Johnson qualified for the state tournament in singles, while Brady Goodman, Noah Reckin, Charlie Behrend and Micah Gunderson qualified for the doubles state tournament.
The Mustangs won the conference tournament last week to claim the conference championship outright ending Eau Claire Memorial's 28-year reign. This is the first time since 1990 that the Mustangs have won the BRC conference.
Menomonie sent 6 of their 7 flights to the championship match. Leading the way was senior captain Isaac Johnson who won the #1 singles championship, earning him recognition as the best player in the conference. Charlie Behrend and Micah Gunderson claimed the championship at the #2 doubles position. Andrew Busch became a conference champion at the #3 singles flight beating Eau Claire Memorial in his championship match.
Congratulations Mustang tennis players on an incredible conference season and tournament!
