The existing pavement on both segments is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, WisDOT is proposing to:
Remove 2.25 inches of the existing asphalt pavement and place 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt pavement in rural areas
Remove 3.25 inches of the existing asphalt pavement and place 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt pavement in urban areas
Replace the joints on the Eighteen Mile Creek Bridge (B-17-0984) in the village of Colfax
Replace guardrail
Replace cross culverts
Place centerline rumble strips in rural areas
Replace pedestrian curb ramps and the railroad crossing on WIS 40 in the village of Colfax
During construction, WIS 40 is expected to be closed for a week for the railroad crossing replacement; traffic will be detoured via 5th Avenue, Dunn Street, and Railroad Avenue. For remaining work, US 12 and WIS 40 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging.
Construction is currently scheduled for 2026.
